How to Find or Create an Unforgettable Profile Photo

I recently started paying attention to how much a person’s profile was influencing me on social media. Sometimes, when I follow a new account, I have a hard time remembering the name of the account, but I can easily remember if their profile photo has a dominant color or otherwise stands out!

So I set out to update my own profile photo, and not only did I realize that I hadn’t updated it in 10 years (oops), but I also found there were a few key factors that took a social media profile photo from average to Unforgettable.

In this blog post, we discuss the importance of a profile photo in creating a connection with potential clients.

Why Your Profile Photo Matters.

Your profile picture serves as your virtual first impression. Whether it’s on social media platforms, professional networking sites, or even dating apps, your profile picture communicates instantly about who you are and whether or not you are trustworthy, likable, and an authority in your field. Therefore, it’s crucial to choose or create a profile photo that is not only memorable but also accurately reflects your personality, brand, or professional image.

  • First Impressions Count: Studies show that it takes just a fraction of a second for someone to form an opinion about you based on your profile picture.
  • Personal Branding: Your profile pic is a crucial element of your personal brand. It communicates your style, professionalism, and values to your audience, whether it’s potential employers, clients, or connections.
  • Visibility and Recognition: An unforgettable profile picture can help you stand out in a sea of profiles. It makes you easily recognizable and increases your visibility online, enhancing your chances of attracting the right opportunities.

Tips for Choosing the Best Profile Picture:

A few tweaks will take your profile photo from meh to Unforgettable:

  1. Show your face – choose either a head-and-shoulders image or head-to-waist. Make sure there is space around your head so that it is not too close or too far
  2. Show Your Personality – Your profile photo is a chance to showcase your personality. Whether you’re smiling, serious, or quirky, let your personality shine through in your photo. Note – research does indicate that people respond better to smiling photos

3. Create Contrast – You don’t want to blend into the background. Simple backgrounds like a solid color work well, but no matter what, look for contrast. This can mean bright clothing against a dark background, dark hair against a light background, etc.

4. Pay Attention to Lighting—Opt for well-lit photos. This means facing the light when you take the photo and trying to use natural window light or daylight-balanced lighting like a photographer would. Turn off those incandescent bulbs!

5. Play with color – Incorporate color into your clothing or the background to help your image pop and create an association with your brand.

  1. Update Regularly – Keep your profile photo up to date to ensure it accurately represents your current self. Aim to update it at least once a year or whenever there’s a significant change in your appearance.
  2. Test Different Options – Don’t be afraid to experiment with different photos to see which one resonates best with your audience. You can even ask for feedback from friends or colleagues to help you make the final decision.
  3. Professional Help – If you’re struggling to find the perfect profile photo, consider hiring a professional photographer who specializes in branding photography. They can help capture your essence and create a standout image that aligns with your personal or professional brand.

Where Can You Use Your Profile Photos?

Don’t forget that people encounter your profile photos in many different places, so creating a strong personal brand means staying on top of all of the places your profile image shows up.
You don’t have to use the same image for each profile and you may want to tailor your profile photo for the audience. For example, you might want a more professional image for LinkedIn but a more fun, playful image for Instagram.
Here are a few places where you can update your profile photo to help make your personal brand pop:

  • Social media profiles – Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, X, Youtube, Facebook, Pinterest, Zoom, Google
  • Website – About me page, contact me page, thank you page, etc
  • Email signatures
  • Printed marketing materials
