Hi, I'm ann

If you’ve been trying to figure out whether you need personal branding photography vs headshots, you’re not alone. It’s one of the most common questions we get at our studio in Barrington, IL, and the confusion makes sense. Both involve a camera, a professional setting, and photos you’ll use for your business. But the purpose, the process, and the results are completely different.

Here’s the short answer: a headshot is a single great photo. A personal branding session is a library of images that tells the story of who you are and how you work. Whether you need one or the other, or both, depends on where your business is right now and what you’re trying to communicate.

Let’s break it down clearly.

What Is a Professional Headshot?

A headshot is a portrait. Usually shoulders up, sometimes mid-torso. Clean background, consistent lighting, professional presentation. Its job is to answer one question clearly: who is this person?

Headshots work best for LinkedIn profiles, email signatures, speaker bios, corporate directories, and anywhere you need a polished, consistent image that travels well. One photo, one purpose, done well.

A good headshot communicates that you take yourself seriously. It signals professionalism before anyone reads a single word of your bio. For professionals who need to show up credibly in a specific context, a headshot is exactly the right tool.

What it is not: a complete brand identity. It won’t tell someone what you do, who you serve, how you work, or why they should trust you over the next person with a similar title.

What Is a Personal Branding Session?

A personal branding session is designed to do something different. Instead of one image, you leave with a gallery, including multiple outfits, settings, and scenarios that reflect your work and personality.

The way I think about it is this: a headshot introduces you. A branding session tells your story. During a branding session, we’re thinking about the whole picture. We plan the outfits, the props, the locations. We capture you at your desk, in conversation, in motion. We build images for your website homepage, your about page, your email newsletters, your social media grid, your podcast cover art. We’re not taking a portrait. We’re building a visual content library.

Which One Do You Actually Need?

You probably need a headshot if:

  • You’re employed or job searching and need a polished LinkedIn photo
  • You’ve just updated your look and your current photo is outdated
  • You’re a speaker, author, or professional who submits bios to conferences or publications
  • You have a solid brand presence already and just need one new image to refresh it

You probably need a branding session if:

  • You’re building or rebuilding your website and need more than one photo
  • You show up inconsistently across platforms and it’s costing you credibility
  • You’re launching a new offer, pivoting your niche, or repositioning your brand
  • You want to consistently post on social without scraping for content
  • You’re a business owner whose personal presence is the brand

If you are doing a personal branding session, we will include headshots so that you have a mix of strong profile photos as well as process and storytelling images.

How to Get the Most From Either Session

Whether you book a headshot or a full branding session, the prep work matters. The clients who feel most confident on set are the ones who’ve thought through their outfits in advance, brought a few options knowing what they want to communicate. Whether you are doing a headshot or a branding session with us, I always give my clients a style guide to help them figure out what to wear. With branding clients, we do a full consultation to plan their shoot, which includes figuring out what to wear.

For headshots: pick 2-3 outfits you feel great in. Solid colors typically read better on camera, but the most important thing is to bring outfits that make you feel good. Think about where the photo will live most and dress accordingly. A LinkedIn photo for a financial advisor reads differently than a speaker bio photo for a wellness coach.

For branding sessions: we do a pre-shoot planning call to map out your brand identity, image needs, and the story we want to tell. You’re not figuring this out alone. By the time you walk into the studio, we already have a shot list and a plan.

The goal is the same either way: you leave with photos that actually work for you, not just photos that look nice.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a headshot and a personal branding session?

A headshot is a single professional portrait, typically used for LinkedIn, bios, and directories. A personal branding session produces a full gallery of images across multiple outfits and settings designed to represent your brand across your website, social media, email, and marketing materials.

How do I know if I need a headshot or a branding session?

If you need one great photo for a specific purpose, a headshot is the right fit. If you’re a business owner who needs consistent, usable images across multiple platforms, a branding session gives you a visual content library you’ll pull from for months.

Can I get a headshot done during a branding session?

Yes. We typically capture a clean headshot look as part of a Signature Branding Session so clients leave with both. It’s one of the most practical ways to check both boxes in one appointment.

How much does a personal branding session cost compared to a headshot?

Headshot sessions are held on designated Headshot Mini Days and cost $490, including hair and makeup and 2 images. Branding sessions are a larger investment because of the preparation, planning, shoot time, and gallery size involved. Our Signature Branding Sessions average around $2,900 including hair and makeup. We’re happy to walk you through what’s included on a consultation call.

How many photos do I get from a personal branding session?

It varies, but most of our branding clients receive 10-50 edited images across multiple looks and settings. The goal is a library, not just a handful of favorites.

Do I need professional photos if I’m just starting my business?

You don’t need a full branding session on day one. A clean headshot can carry you in the early stages. But once you’re actively booking clients, growing a presence online, or building a website that needs to represent you well, professional branding photos start paying for themselves quickly.

Where are you located? Do you serve the Chicago suburbs?

Our studio is in Barrington, IL, and we work with clients throughout the Chicago suburbs, including Lake County, the North Shore, Naperville, Schaumburg, and surrounding areas.
