Creating Awesome Engagement Photos

We’ve posted FAQ’s on getting ready for your Engagement Sessions in the past – what to wear  – but we were so impressed by our recent couples that we wanted to share a few more ideas to make your engagement photos even more awesome.

1.  Choosing a Location – Time and Location are extremely tricky and extremely important.  We are looking for light and texture rather than nice scenery.  Specifically, we are looking for pockets of light – areas where light and shadow interact.  We don’t really want direct sunlight or complete shadow, but rather, we want to play a little bit with afternoon light and areas of shade.  So, if we’re inside, look for windows, or outside, look for things for the light to come through – trees, long grass, etc.

2.  Wardrobe – Your wardrobe is all about you and your personality, but some things tend to work better in photos than others.  As a general rule, as a woman, we want to emphasize your curves.  Look for wardrobe items that accentuate your waist and your curves.  Items that lend shape tend to photograph better than loose items that can make you look wider than you are.  Along those lines, blazers and jackets can work well because they tend to make mid-sections look smaller as well as add color and style.  Now that it’s fall, a great fall jacket helps give you diversity and emphasize the season.

3.  Props – Bring ’em!  Having some kind of prop can help you relax and give you something to do, as well as create some interest in your photos.  It can be as simple as bringing a bike, picnic basket, or pet, or as elaborate as shooting with your horses (seriously, we would love to do a horse-centered engagement shoot!).

4.  Relax and Have Fun – Seriously, the most important part is that you and your fiance come ready to have fun.   Don’t let yourself get nervous, just remember that you are out for a fun afternoon with the person you love.

I hope that helps!  I’m sure we’ll do another installment soon!
